Literature corrupts? Really?

March 21, 2011

Literature has been “on” for a long, long time. Ever since the man has the ability to write (and of course to read what he has written), the books and the texts in them ‘corrupt’ the world.Perhaps it’s only temporary – while reading, for example when we’ve been carried away by the development of the events in a given book.

My point here is that literature should be taken more as a ‘brainfood’ than a way to corrupt society. It might be strange to compare food with literature but they are all the same. There are so many different kinds of food – and in literature there are just as many genres! When we eat, we satisfy our hunger or we pamper our senses with something that gives us pleasure.

People read in their free time, to relax or in stead of wasting time in front of the TV. But literature lover find pleasure in every line of the book. Isn’t that the experience that “professional tasters” go through. They don’t “eat” the food, they taste it and they feel it because the pleasure is in the taste of the food not in the chewing. So let’s face it – something that gives you pleasure can not corrupt you. Yes, it may have bad influence on you but..Literature?

… Really?
